Vinduino Project saves 25% of water and labor, a successful LoRa application story at Van der Lee Vineyard, California

The 2016 Internet of Things “Editor’s Choice” Awarded project – Vinduino, has adapted GlobalSat LoRa M.O.S.T. eco-system for its 3rd generation deployment and had drawn a lot of attentions at Grape Day 2016 in Tamecula, CA on April 21th. The founder of Vinduino, Reinier Van de Lee, is an expert in electrical engineering and runs his vineyard in California. His pioneer project Vinduino is aiming to resolve irrigation problem which brought him much trouble on the timing for watering his vineyard. By using gypsum sensors to detect the moisture level at different depth of the soil, Reinier is able to collect these data across his five acres vineyard, then analyze and determine the best irrigation timing and water amount. The Vinduino Project proves a 25% saving of water plus a large saving of labor using an overall system with an impressively low cost.

By integrating GlobalSat LoRa module LM-230H to an Arduino board, the gypsum sensor data is transmitted to GlobalSat LoRa USB Dongle LD-20H that is hooked on a Notebook PC as Gateway. There are 20 sensor-nodes implemented in the five-acre vineyard for evaluation, and using one LD-20H can retrieve all data correctly at Reinier’s farm land. He also proves that 3 Gateways is enough to cover all the vineyards across the 10-mile-wide Tamecula Village. GlobalSat M.O.S.T. is a flexible solution for LoRa applications. LD-20H is programmed to poll individual sensor nodes at a pre-set time interval. Each sensor node data is periodically transmitted over long distance to LD-20H through LM-230H, and the sensor data are analyzed to determine the best irrigation arrangement. GlobalSat is now working with Reinier to commercialize the Vinduino Project.
